What you need: about $8 of materials

  • A stiff flat panel. Corrugated cardboard from a shipping box, a plastic chopping board, thin plywood, or craft foam. Cardboard is free and works well.
  • Two shoelaces in different colors, at least 45 inches each. Flat cotton laces grip better than round or waxed ones.
  • A hole punch, or a sharpened pencil and a little patience.
  • Clear packing tape or adhesive hole-reinforcement rings.
  • A ruler, a marker, and scissors.

The only purchase for most families is a pack of laces, roughly $6 to $10. An outgrown sneaker in the closet drops that to nothing.

Build it in 15 minutes

The whole shoe tying practice board DIY process is six steps, and no craft skill is required at any point.

Step 1: Cut the panel

Cut a rectangle roughly 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide, close to the footprint of a child's sneaker upper. Round the top corners if you want a shoe shape. Looks are optional; size is not.

Step 2: Mark the eyelets

Draw two vertical lines about 2 inches apart, centered on the panel. Mark five dots down each line, spaced about 1.25 inches apart. That gives five pairs of holes, the same count as most kids' sneakers.

Step 3: Punch and reinforce

Punch each dot. With a pencil, twist rather than stab, and put a magazine underneath. Lay clear tape over the holes on both faces, then re-punch through it β€” the tape stops cardboard tearing after a few dozen hard pulls.

Step 4: Make a two-color lace

Cut one lace of each color in half. Overlap one red half and one blue half by about an inch at the cut ends, and join them with a tight square knot, a few stitches, or a snug wrap of tape. Trim the finished lace to roughly 36 to 40 inches. You now have one lace that is red on the left and blue on the right.

Step 5: Lace the board

Thread it the same way your child's real shoes are laced β€” criss-cross for most sneakers, straight-bar for some school shoes. Work up from the bottom pair, keeping the color join at the bottom center so each side stays one solid color.

Step 6: Add a stand (do not skip this)

Tape a folded strip of cardboard to the back, like a picture-frame kickstand, so the board sits propped at 30 to 45 degrees. Two minutes of work, and the difference between a craft and a training tool.

Why the angle and orientation matter

A flat board on a table is an easier motor problem than a shoe on a foot. Everything sits in front of the child, level with their eyes, and completely still. A real shoe sits low, angles away, and tilts whenever the foot moves.

A board that lives permanently flat therefore trains a slightly different skill than the one you want. Start flat if that is what your child can manage today. Then prop it. Then move it to the lap. Each shift is small enough that the previous skill carries across.

Why two lace colors matter

Half the confusion in early shoe tying is verbal. "Take this one" and "now that one" mean nothing to a child whose hands are busy and eyes locked on the knot. Two colors hand you a shared vocabulary: red goes over blue, blue makes the loop, red wraps around.

Getting the eyelet spacing right

Craft tutorials punch holes wherever they happen to fit, and spacing changes the problem more than you would expect. Holes too far apart force the child to haul long stretches of lace, and the bow floats above the board. Holes too close together let the sides tangle and remove the wrist rotation a real shoe needs.

Two inches between columns and 1.25 inches between rows lands close to a typical kids' size 12 to 1 sneaker. To be precise, lay a ruler across the top pair of eyelets on your child's own shoe and copy that number.

The honest limitation: boards do not transfer on their own

Here is the part the craft posts never say. A child who ties the board beautifully can still fail completely at a real shoe, and their parents are left baffled.

Motor skills stay tied to the context they were learned in. Change the angle, the surface, and the body position, and the brain treats it as a related but new problem. The board taught the finger sequence. It did not teach tying while bent forward at the waist, at floor level, with a foot that keeps moving. Plan for the transfer rather than hoping for it.

How to bridge from board to shoe

  1. Board flat on the table until the bow is reliable three days running.
  2. Board propped at an angle, still on the table.
  3. Board on the child's lap, pointing away from them, matching the view they will have of a real shoe.
  4. A real shoe on the table, laced with two-tone laces if you have them.
  5. The shoe on the child's foot, foot up on a chair so they are not reaching the floor.
  6. The shoe on the floor, the everyday version.

Move one rung at a time and expect a small dip at each change. If a rung falls apart, drop back one for a few days. When a board is not the right tool

  • The prerequisites are not there yet. If crossing two laces and pulling them tight is still hard, more bow practice will not help. Work on hand strength and threading first.
